Online homeschooling options generally boil down to a student taking online classes. While the type of class and enrollment varies, a family can choose how reliant on online schooling they wish to be. Some families wish to only enroll students in elective based online classes. Other families look into completely replacing the homeschool curriculum with online schooling. Each family and their preferences are different. It’s important to note too, that students also learn in different ways. Types of Online Classes
Now that we’ve discussed what the online homeschooling alternatives are, let’s dive into the types available. Ultimately, online classes can be divided into two major categories: Synchronous and Asynchronous instruction. Synchronous instruction is taught in a live setting. This means the teacher is present and teaching the lesson live to students. The benefits of this is that the student can ask questions and get a direct response during class time. The drawback lies in that students have a scheduled time for class that they must show up to. Alternative, asynchronous classes are sets of prerecorded lessons and lectures. While this experience is less individualized, it affords the flexibility in allowing the student to complete the class on their own time. In general, asynchronous classes have milestones to keep students on track, but it’s up to the student to watch and listen to the recorded lessons that the teacher posts.
