From Zoom Fatigue to Engagement: How We Keep Online Students Focused

If your child once loved school but now dreads logging into class, you’re not alone. Across the world, students have been battling ‘Zoom Fatigue’—a draining mix of boredom, screen burnout, and disconnection. But what if online learning didn’t have to be this way? At Tenney School Live, we believe virtual education can be personal, engaging, and even inspiring. Here’s how we turn screen time into thriving time.

The Problem: Why Traditional Online Learning Falls Short

Before we jump into how we transformed our online environment to maximize engagement, let’s first discuss the problem with more traditional online learning environments and why it falls short.

Cognitive Overload and Passive Learning:

One contributor I want to discuss is cognitive overload and passive learning. mayoclinichealthsystem.org defines cognitive overload as:

When there is too much information to process, you may feel cognitive overload. This happens when you reach a point of paralysis of information — not being able to process and then act on what is heard.

A traditional online learning environment compounds this issue due to the way these ‘traditional’ classes are conducted. In general, these virtual classrooms consist of 20 or more students. This restricts the pace of the classroom which can cause many students to fall behind as cognitive overload takes hold. Furthermore, this type of learning environment restricts students to a passive learning style. Passive learning is when the student is not actively engaged in the lesson. Examples of passive learning would include long lectures, restrictive time for questions, lack of opportunities to participate, etc.

Social Isolation:

Many students who switch over to an online learning platform struggle with social isolation. Students will generally lock themselves in their room and attend class virtually. For traditional online platforms, there is a lack of opportunity for the student to engage with other students or the teacher. This causes a stint of social isolation that can be difficult to break away from. It can also impact a student’s social development as they are not getting the stimulation needed to form important social skills.

One-Size-Fits-All Curriculum:

As we have broken down the traditional online learning environment—it seems apparent that many of these programs consist of a one-size-fits-all curriculum. This is unfortunate because many families make the switch to online learning to escape this type of learning that’s present at many mainstream public and private schools. For this reason, many families see a lack of improvement in their student’s learning experience, and in some cases the student actually suffers academically! Our Solution: The Tenney School Live Difference

Now that we’ve discussed the common problems with online learning platforms—let’s dive into what Tenney School Live does differently!

1. One-to-One Class Model

Where many online learning platforms sacrifice individualized education for larger classroom learning, we’ve opted to do the complete opposite! Through our proven one-to-one class model, we’ve created an online learning platform that prioritizes your student’s success! We’re able to individualize lessons for students that keeps them on track to accomplish their work while focusing on engagement over passive learning. Through this we’re able to confidently say that your student will have the right teacher for the job!

2. Shorter, More Effective Classes

In our experience, we’ve found that shortening class periods down to only 27 minutes helps improve student retention while eliminating cognitive overload entirely! Whether the student has ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, anxiety, or is gifted—shorter classes are more effective in keeping them focused on their work. This is the exact same model we use for our in-person school: The Tenney School which has been teaching students one-on-one for over 50 years!

3. Customized Learning Paths

As mentioned previously, the one-on-one learning model opens new doors for customized learning paths. This means a teacher can adapt and mold a lesson to accommodate and fit a student’s learning style! Furthermore, we incorporate live group sessions with students moving a similar pace to allow for social integrations and the ability to forge new friendships with peers. We’ve found that students who attend Tenney School Live are happier and more motivated to accomplish work!

4. Built-In Breaks and Movement

After each class we allow students a 3 minute break to stand up, get a snack, and have a quick mental rest before jumping back in. The reason for this is that our online teachers are the same teachers at our in-person school: The Tenney School. The 3-minute break serves as the passing period and this is reflected in the online learning environment. Homeroom time is also allocated and scheduled throughout the day where the student can complete homework, meet with their teachers, complete tests, and more!

5. Interactive Technology and Engagement Tools

Each one of our students is issued a school Chromebook and document camera (as well as physical textbooks). We priority mail these tools to families to ensure that they are acquired prior to the first day. Each and every student is also issued the full Office 365 suite where they can login with their school email address. Each one of our classes are held live on Microsoft TEAMs and parents can login to the Blackbaud portal to see assignment due dates, test dates, and updates from teachers!

6. Teacher Training for Online Excellence

Each one of our teachers at Tenney School Live are specially trained for online excellence. Our teachers are equipped with the know-how to solve technical problems—either on their side or the student’s side. Our teachers are also ready to work with you on finding the best accommodations for your student.

7. Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing

Our program is aware of the risk of social isolation and because of this we have an Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) on campus (virtually) that is ready to meet with students any time. Additionally, our teachers are encouraged to engage with students on any problems they may be having, whether academically or socially (in terms of isolation). We’ve built up a strong support network because we know that your student is the most important thing!
